About Us

The Centre is a unique town centre venue offering three spaces for hire - two larger halls and a cosy meeting room. The meeting room is carpeted, whilst the halls have wooden floors. Tucked near the the bottom of St John's Street with its independent shops and next to the church, we're a peaceful spot for all sorts of activities and services, many of which support wellbeing.

The building is a beautifully restored former Victorian infant school, full of character. Naturally light and airy, the building has retained many period features such as original doors and windows and exposed brickwork, which are complemented by soft colours and lighting, as well as an enclosed garden area. We are suitable for a wide range of purposes and offer favourable rates for small charities and community services & activities. Our aim is that The Centre is accessible to all and has been designed to be wheelchair friendly with a level access WC and wide doorways. We have a hearing loop and baby changing facilities. The Centre also houses our vegetarian café - the Old School Cafe.

We are five minutes’ walk of bus and railway stations and long stay car parking.

Our Charity

Bury St. Edmunds Ecumenical Centre Trust (BECT) is a registered charity (1099687) and was set up specifically to support The Centre as a local education, wellbeing, and community centre. It leases the building from St John’s School Centre Trust and is governed by appointed Trustees.

The Charity aims to improve the health and well-being of everyone in the community and encourage them to take part in a range of activities, services and facilities within The Centre, as well as preserve the building as a community venue.
